Mike Norman, a Crawfordsville Police Department Detective Sergeant, was the head officer on four separate investigations that led to four drug-related arrests Sunday.

Arrested at their places of residence in Crawfordsville were James E. McCaskill, 31, and Anthony Cummins, 37. Henry Kolep, 51, and Barbara Crownover, 50, already were lodged at the Montgomery County Jail. Three of the four arrests were for prescription drug offenses.

“I worked in narcotics for years,” CPD Chief Kurt Knecht said. “All everyone wants to talk about is meth, cocaine and marijuana. I believe the biggest problem we have here is prescription drugs. It’s something that just gets overlooked.”
Crownover was charged with two counts of Class B felony dealing in schedule I, II and III controlled substances. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, schedule I substances are those with the highest potential for abuse and include codeine, heroin and marijuana. Schedule II substances include cocaine, Ritalin, opium, methadone, OxyContin, percocet, percodan, morphine, hydrocodone, barbiturates and amphetamines; schedule III drugs include smaller doses of codeine, hydrocodone or opiates.

McCaskill was charged with Class B felony dealing in methamphetamine. His bond was set at $10,000 surety or $5,000 cash.

Kolep was charged with Class B felony dealing in a schedule II controlled substance. His bond for the charges he was arrested on Sunday was set at $10,000 surety or $5,000 cash.
Cummins was charged with two Class C felony counts of dealing in a schedule IV controlled substance. Drugs classified as schedule IV, according to the DEA, include a variety of narcotics, depressants and stimulants that carry a low potential for abuse. Cummins’ bond was set at $4,000 surety or $1,000 cash.

The maximum prison sentence for a Class B felony is 20 years; for a Class C felony it is eight years.

“What you have to remember is that murder is an A felony,” Knecht pointed out. “So these charges are pretty far up.”
The arrests took place without incident, Norman said. He was assisted by CPD Det. Sgt. Bob Rivers.

Norman is close to making arrests in several more drug cases. He declined to say how many arrests were pending.

“Some (of the suspects) have left and gone out of state, but we’re still pursuing them,” he said. “We’re working with various informants. We anticipate serving several more warrants.”
Knecht said he would encourage anyone with information on drug-related activity to call the department at 362-3762, Ext. 216, or submit tips online at crawfordsvillepolice.com.
