Clean Air Work Group
The Clean Air Work Group met Oct. 31 with Betty Hoover, Isaac Miller, Lacy Hardesty, Jackie Crowder, Donna Swank, Hannah Vasquez, Jennifer Shook and Father Alexis Miller in attendance. Miller reported on the National Conference on Tobacco or Health. He attended workshops on the Philip Morris Project Sunrise, a strategy by big tobacco to take over the anti-tobacco movement through involvement in FDA regulation, youth prevention and adult cessation. Miller received information about the Quit Smart cessation program and met the founder of the program, Dr. Robert Shipley, director of the Duke Stop Smoking Clinic. AHEAD is writing a supplemental grant to conduct a major cessation initiative in 2008 using the Quit Smart program.
The group has two faith partners who are signed up as adult allies in the voice movement. These are the God Squad, headed by Crowder, and Friday Night Live, headed by Vasquez. Waynetown Morning Circle The Waynewtown Morning Circle Club met Nov. 14 in the Fellowship Hall of the Christian Church.
President Gerry Ballard opened the meeting. Secretary Betty Allison and Treasurer Lois Steelsmith gave their reports and they were approved. Cheer plates will be made Dec. 19. Plans for the Christmas Breakfast were discussed. The Luminary Walk will be Dec. 9. Ramona Hallett dismissed the meeting with prayer. January devotions will be given by Peg Proctor.
Crescendos Choral Club With the holiday season here, the Crescendos are finding their schedules filled preparing with upcoming events. Joining with the Men’s Chorus, the group gave a Veterans Day performance for the Retired Teachers Association at the Holiday Inn. They have also recently entertained the residents of Lane House and Williamsburg Nursing Home. In December, the chorus is looking forward to participating in the annual Christmas program at the Vanity Theatre on Dec. 14-15. Rounding out the year, they will gather at Old Normal Hall in Ladoga for their Christmas dinner party.
For information on the Crescendos, call Pat Parry at 723-1545 or Joanne Willhite at 794-9002. The group is directed by Marsha Smith and accompanied by Connie Meek. Wingate Extension Homemakers The Wingate Extension Homemakers Club met Nov. 13. President Rachel Pensinger opened the meeting.
Pat Stine led the pledges, and the Homemakers Creed was said. Devotions were given by Pat Palin and Mary Pickel. Nine members present participated in giving their Wingate Wisdom and roll call. Minutes were read by Lois Grond and accepted. Treasurer’s report was given by Palin and accepted. The health and safety report was given by Grond, and the lesson was given by Stine. Pensinger and Stine reported on the Holiday Expo being successful. The club will meet 11:30 a.m. Dec. 11 at the Holiday Inn for lunch. Pickel will host the gift exchange at her home following lunch.
New Ross Extension Homemakers Members of the New Ross Extension Homemakers met at Southmont High School. Sharon Perry gave the invocation. President Vera Feather opened the business meeting by leading the group in the flag salutes, creed and mission statement. Ruby Stanley gave devotions and closed with an inspiration. The secretary and treasurer reports were approved and roll call was taken. The health and safety lesson was given by Perry. Items were collected for mental health. Members were reminded of food donations they were responsible for at the Holiday Expo.
Dorothy Q Chapter of NSDAR Members of the Dorothy Q Chapter of NSDAR met recently in the Chapter House for their monthly meeting. Lela Lofland, first vice regent, called the meeting to order. Guest speaker Eric Small, a Crawfordsville firefighter, spoke about fire alarms and extinguishers. During the business meeting, members giving reports were Mary Pickel, Lofland, Patricia Broshears and Mary Jane Flaningam.
The next meeting will be Dec. 15. Awards will be presented to DAR Good Citizens winners. Harmony 18 Extension Homemakers Harmony 18 Extension Homemakers met in the home of Hulah O’Dell. Martha Lewellen opened the meeting, and Jean Chadwick led the flag salutes, creed and mission statement.
Secretary report was read and approved, and treasurer report was read. Ten members answered roll call. Freida Cosby gave her health report of mammograms. She will take 300 puppy pillows to Riley Children’s Hospital, which will make 1,500 this year. A motion was made to give $15 to mental health. A motion was made to bring paper products or items for Crisis Shelter to the December meeting. The lesson on tobacco and smoking was given by Marilyn Peterman.
Chadwick said the club could go to Southmont for its Christmas luncheon. They will meet at noon at Cosby’s home and carpool. Inspiration was read by O’Dell. Cards were signed for LeRoy Musselman, Peggy Caldwell, Hazel and Jim Foxworthy, Booie Priest and Harold Prasser. The December meeting will be a luncheon at Southmont and then to the home of Cosby or Lewellen.
Sugar Creek Quilt Guild The Sugar Creek Quilt Guild met Nov. 19 at the Crawfordsville District Public Library. Dian Himes from the Avon Quiltery gave a presentation about new embellishment products and paint sticks. It was announced the quilt bazaar was a success. Sara Kleihauer offered a new quilt challenge for members called “What happened next.” Participating members will write the next part of the story and make a small quilt for their part. Basting at St. John’s will be 1 p.m. Dec. 10. A quilt bee will be Dec. 12 at the home of Lois Vance. Contact her if planning to attend. A New Year’s Day Applique Party will be at the home of Anita Hardwick to work on blocks for the opportunity quilt. The annual salad pitch-in will be Dec. 17. Bring a salad to share and a fat quarter of fabric in a paper bag. People may bring a nametag to exchange as well. The meeting will begin 6 p.m. Genealogy Club of Montgomery County The Genealogy Club of Montgomery County met at the Crawfordsville District Public Library on Nov. 13 for its regular meeting, which was called to order by President Dian Moore. It was announced that Kim Hancock accepted an award for the club on restoration of the O’Neall Cemetery given by the Montgomery County Historical Society. Moore gave a presentation on her recent trip to Iceland. Minutes of the October meeting were presented by Pat Mills and accepted. Treasurer report was given by Alberta Krout, who also presented the budget for 2008. It was accepted. The December meeting will be 7 p.m. Dec. 11. The club will continue to have its quarterly After Hours Workshops at the library in January, April, July and October. Committees for 2008 were formed with the following chairmen: Krout, finance and membership; Ruth Evans, activities; Pat Wills, public information; Hancock, cemetery restoration; Ted Ratcliff, grants; and Nelson Wilson, newsletter editor. The newsletter will be published quarterly. The club’s 2008 photo calendars are for sale at the Crawfordsville District Public Library, Carnegie Museum, Visitors Bureau, Lane Place, Old Jail Museum and through club members. They are $7 or $8 if mailed. The funds go to cemetery restoration. Town and Country Homemakers Club The Town and Country Homemakers Club met at the Roachdale Christian Church for the November meeting. President Barbara Brookshire opened the meeting, and hostesses were Dorothy Ford and Delores Risk. Twelve members and one guest, Carla Brookshire, were present. Collection cans were passed around for donations for the Putnam County Crisis Center and Coins for Friendship. The secretary report was read and corrected. Risk gave the treasurer report. Marge Hopkins gave the health and safety report and lesson for the month. Edith Fry reported that money from the Putnam County Past Presidents treasury has been used to put up curtained partitions on the east end of the community building so equipment used during fair time can be out of sight for other events. Brookshire reported the food donations to a member in need of help were appreciated. Hopkins suggested with the Christmas food basket the club add gifts for her and her handicapped son. She volunteered to fill the basket with food and take care of the gifts and members could reimburse her. The December meeting will be lunch at Southmont High School on Dec. 14 and then to Brookshire’s home for a Christmas party. Covington Woman’s Club Barbara Wilson, president of the Covington Woman’s Club, welcomed members on Nov. 16 and thanked hostesses Jane Bowers and Sally Turner. Rosemary Hunt lit a candle and presented a memorial for recently deceased member Ruth Dicks, who had been a member since 1981 and served as president 1994-96. A thank-you letter was read from Cindy Ricketts, center facilitator for the Fountain/Warren Head Start, for the Christmas gifts recently received from the club. Also read was a note from associate member Virginia Bennett, who now lives in Missouri. Next month’s Christmas luncheon will be 12:30 p.m. Dec. 14 at the home of Nancy Wagner, who will prepare lunch. There will be live Christmas dinner music and a Christmas sing, but no gift exchange. Hunt reported sending a card to Helen Shelby, who recently broke her hip. Special committee chairs Ginger Orr, arts; Wagner, conservation; Louise Osgood, home life; Mary Kay Young, international affairs; and Bowers, local events, gave their reports. Bowers’ daughter, Emily Miller of Generations Catering Service, presented a program on snack foods. Luci Galloway won the door prize. |
