Pedestrians in Crawfordsville can feel assured they will be safe when crossing the street at the corner of U.S. 231 and Main Street.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has introduced Countdown Pedestrian Indication lights to Crawfordsville. The light was installed on Nov. 30 at the crosswalk of U.S. 231 and Main Street. The seconds count down, allowing the pedestrian to know how many are left to cross safely before the “don’t walk” sign appears. The light also chirps once for every second left to cross the street.

Crawfordsville was one of the first sites to test the new light, according to Crawfordsville District Deputy Commissioner Alan Plunkett. The new indication light is being tested by INDOT throughout several other Indiana locations.
Pedestrians using the cross walk at U.S. 231 and Main Street had a few things to say about the light.

“I like them because it tells how long you have to get across the street,” Stacy Lewellen, Crawfordsville said.

Ladoga resident Sandy Neal also thought the light was a good addition.
“This light gives you an idea of the time you have to cross the street, which is nice,” she said.

Amy Cockran of Hillsboro pointed out a possible flaw with the light.

“I have noticed the numbers are only for one side of the street and not for the other side,” she said.
John Prasser of Crawfordsville said the first time he crossed the street after the light was installed, he didn’t even notice it.

“I think it kind of takes a while for the light to allow people to enter the walk,” said Vivian Prasser, who was in town visiting family.

Testing will continue with the lights, and if they are a success they will be installed throughout the state and become the new standard for Hoosier crosswalks, a release from INDOT said.
