Sixty acres of city property on the west side of Sugar Creek are expected to become the location of a nature park and education center over the next two years.

For several months, Mayor Charlie Coons has been meeting with the Sugar Creek Nature Park Planning Committee. Their plan is to turn 60.63 acres of land on the city’s north side, located between the creek and Lafayette Avenue, into an area where people can picnic and students can study the creek, soil samples and the effects of pollution.

“It’s an entry to our city,” Coons said at a committee meeting Tuesday morning. “For years it has set there and done nothing. We can dress it up a little bit. With very little cost it can become a big plus for our community.”
