Montgomery County Community Foundation continues to celebrate its 20th anniversary by awarding $20,000 in 20 weeks. Nonprofit organizations have been invited to submit simple one-page applications to be placed into a weekly drawing for $1,000. The winner this week is the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County.

The museum, owned and operated by the Crawfordsville District Public Library, is located in the former Crawfordsville District Public Library, the first Carnegie Library to open in Indiana.

Museum Director Kat Burkhart has three goals she’d like to accomplish with the $1,000.

First, she plans to have a portrait of Andrew Carnegie, the philanthropist who funded the building, brought out of storage, framed and mounted, so that it can be prominently displayed in the museum. She points out how fitting the museum’s interdisciplinary focus, featuring art, science and culture is to Carnegie’s multifaceted life.

Burkhart also plans to expand and upgrade he local authors display. This will allow specific authors to be featured one at a time, starting with local author, Janet Lambert.

Finally, additional marketing of the “Summer at the Museum” program will done in an effort to reach more people, especially families. This is a fun and free way to explore the Carnegie Museum. Geared for students from preschool through high school, this program encourages participants to visit six times before Aug. 13 and earn prizes for completing activities.

The Carnegie Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and admission is free.

With just four weeks to go, local nonprofit organizations (501c status) may still submit applications. Those not drawn are kept and placed in the subsequent week’s drawing so there is no need to re-enter each week.  The simple application can be found at It may be printed, filled out and dropped off at 119 E. Main St. or mailed to P.O. Box 334 Crawfordsville, IN 47933. Easier yet, it can be filled out and submitted electronically.
