The deadline to register for next weekend’s Friends of Sugar Creek Family Float Trip is approaching.

Friday is the registration deadline for the annual event, which promotes recreation on the creek. Canoes will be provided free of charge to the first 10 registrants.

Paddlers can also bring their own canoes and kayaks or rent a vessel. Register online at or by calling executive director Cindy Woodall at 765-364-0050.

The trip launches at 9 a.m. June 22 at the old Coke Plant on Lafayette Avenue. The four-mile route ends at the Rock River Trailhead Park, where lunch will be provided.

Families are joined on the water by Friends members well versed in the natural features of the creek and the wildlife that make their home along the banks.

“We usually point out where there’s some eagle nests,” Woodall said.

The next event on the Friends calendar is the annual Kids, Canoes & Crinoids on July 20. Children travel the creek with Friends members who show how to hunt for fossils, explore wildlife, take water samples and other activities.

The fall creek clean-up day follows on Sept. 7. Both events launch from the old Coke Plant.
