A Pascagoula, Miss., man died Tuesday in an industrial accident at Nucor Steel in Crawfordsville.

Ron Dickerson, vice president and general manager at Nucor, said 47-year-old Patrick Porter was a maintenance contractor who was “performing maintenance as part of the plant’s annual maintenance outage.”

“(Porter) was apparently struck by some sort of machinery. I believe it was a forklift,” said Montgomery County Coroner David Hunt.

Crawfordsville Fire Department Investigator Jim Fulwider said emergency personnel were called to the sheet mill plant at Nucor at 11:05 a.m. in reference to a forklift accident. Scanner traffic indicated Porter was in full cardiac arrest and that medics performed CPR on him. A medical helicopter was called to Nucor, but Porter was ultimately transferred via ambulance to Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health-Crawfordsville, where Hunt pronounced him dead less than an hour after the accident occurred.

Hunt declined to speculate on the cause of Porter’s death.

“There will be an autopsy tomorrow,” he said.

Hunt said the autopsy will be conducted at Terre Haute.

Representatives from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Crawfordsville Police Department also assisted at the accident scene.

“We’re going to let Nucor and the coroner’s office release the information,” Montgomery County Chief Deputy Ryan Needham said. “I believe OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) will be sending investigators out.”

Dickerson confirmed that OSHA was contacted immediately following the accident, and that investigators had already been to the plant.

“All of us at Nucor Steel Indiana are truly saddened by the incident and our hearts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased,”  Dickerson said.

Nucor is the largest steel producer in the United States and is the nation’s largest recycler.  Nucor and affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities in fourteen states. Products produced are: carbon and alloy steel – in bars, beams, sheet and plate; steel joists and joist girders; steel deck; cold finished steel; steel fasteners; metal building systems; and light gauge steel framing.
