Three newcomers will be on the general election ballot as Republicans for a seat on the Darlington town council.

The Montgomery County Republican Party held a convention Monday to trim the list of six candidates that filed for the five-member council. Those in attendance could vote for up to five candidates, and the top five vote-getters will appear on the ballot in November.

Of the 468 registered voters in Darlington, 32 showed up for Monday’s convention.

Incumbent Kimberly (Kim) Carpenter received 27 votes while Nicholas (Nick) Riddell had 26, Nicole Parker had 25, Noelle Suiter had 21 and incumbent Ron Hatley had 17. The five Republican candidates will run against incumbents Marilyn Cohee and Teresa Sutherlin, who are Independents, in the general election.

New Ross will hold a convention at 6 p.m. today at the New Ross Volunteer Fire Station to determine its town council.  Jason Haltom, Lowell Rogers, Michall Shaw, Sherry Whetstone and incumbent Mike Myers filed for the town’s three-person council.
