The Montgomery County chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators, awarded scholarships to the following local students who will be attending or returning to college: Hope Lighty, Southmont High School; Alec Asbury, North Montgomery High School; Sarah Chalmers, Crawfordsville High School; colloge sophomore Carollyn Francis; college junior Marlowe McVay; college seniors, Jacklyn Stewart and Angela Johnson; non-traditional student Jacob Remender; post college graduate grants to Jenna Starlin, Missy Ritchie and Emily Race; and workshop stipends to MaryLou Dawald, Dianne Lowe and Cynthia McDonald.

Funds for these awards are from the chapter’s Helen Allhands Scholarship Fund. Allhands was a longtime Montgomery County elementary teacher who was dedicated to education and professional development for educators. In 2005 her husband established a trust in her honor to continue to promote those goals for Montgomery County graduates and educators. Allhands was a charter member of the Iota chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and international educators organization. This group is responsible for the administration of the trust. An award of $1,000 is given to an outstanding senior from each of the Montgomery County high school who will be pursuing a degree in the field of education. This is a renewable award for each of the students undergraduate years.
