WARSAW, Ind. (AP) — Police in northern Indiana have identified an 8-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a car while crossing a street near an elementary school.

The Warsaw Police Department identified the boy Tuesday as Gidieon Cook. Police say the boy was in the crosswalk when he was hit by the car about 1:45 p.m. Monday outside Harrison Elementary School in the city about 40 miles northwest of Fort Wayne. Police say the boy was attending summer school.

The boy was being taken to a Fort Wayne hospital but the ambulance diverted to a Columbia City hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash involving a 24-year-old driver remains under investigation.
