It took 94 minutes and seven shootout kicks before Western Boone earned a 2-1 win over Southmont to advance to the sectional title game Saturday.
It was Western Boone’s Alex Glidewell shootout kick which proved to be the game winner. His shot sailed past Southmont goalie Daniel McCormick to put the Stars up 6-5. That left the game in the hands of Southnmont’s Devin Miller.
Miller’s kick sailed just above the net to secure the victory for the Stars.
“We played so hard,” Southmont coach Brandon Rush said. “As a first-year coach this is tough for me, I can’t imagine what it’s like for the players. I am so proud of them. They came from having no team to putting it all on the line like this.”
Southmont got the early lead 93 seconds into the game when Cameron Remley broke loose and scored. However that was the lone goal for the night for the Mounties.
Western Boone scored on a Sean Farris goal with just 7:44 to play in the first half.
From there neither team scored in the second half or either of the two seven-minute overtimes.
In the shootout Southmont got goals from Lucas Turner, Edward Farebee, Reid Fouty and Cody Thomas in the first round. The Evan McIntire scored before Miller missed.
Southmont ended the season at 3-9-1. Western Boone moved to 6-10 with the win.
