A single stroke was all that separated Lebanon and Southmont on Saturday afternoon at the Sagamore Conference meet at the Crawfordsville Country Club.
Playing on their home course, the Mounties were unable to catch the Tigers after a slow start, falling 378-379.
Crawfordsville was fifth with a 426, while North Montgomery was eighth at 477. Tri-West placed third with a round of 395, Danville fourth at 415, Western Boone was fifth with a 432, and Frankfort sixth at 451.
“One stroke,” Southmont coach Bill Whalen said. “We preach and we preach every stroke counts, every stroke counts. I hope they use this not as a deterrent, but as motivation for the sectional next week.”
On the front side the Mounties fired a 193 as a team, before coming back to shoot a 186 on the back nine.
Led by Bailey Thompson’s 91, the Mounties put three on the all-conference first team. Logan Berrisford shot a 93, while Carson White had a 96. Erin Williams and Lexi Rusk both made second-team all conference with 99s.
“I thought with five seniors we would have at least one girl in the 80s,” Whalen said. “And that’s obviously what we needed to do.”
Danville’s Kyra Clark was the meet medalist with an 85, while Lebanon’s Ella Taylor shot an 87. Crawfordsville’s Bailey Mittal was third overall with a 90.
“She didn’t start off real good, but she got into a rhythm,” Athenian’s coach Tony Thomas said. “And then on the back she went bogey, double-bogey, and then had five pars in a row. Most of the kids had some holes where they did some good things.”
Georgia Kincaid made second-team all conference honors with a 106, while Evie Redding fired a 107, Sadie Walker a 123, and Gwen Redding a 124 to round out Crawfordsville’s score.
Abbie Horn led North Montgomery with a 116, while Grace Shrader fired a 118, and Grace Littell a 121. Morgan Swick had a 122, and Ella Stultz a 126.
"Just all year we’ve kind of shot that number,” Chargers coach Nick Johnson said. “And we just can’t get off that snide. We will use this as a learning process, and we will use this to prepare next week for the county meet.”
All three Montgomery County teams will be back at the Crawfordsville Country Club on Wednesday evening for the county meet, while Southmont will look for redemption over Lebanon in the IHSAA Sectional at Harrison Hills in Attica on Saturday.
