Alice May Hutchison, 97, of Covington was reunited with her beloved “Hutch” in Heaven on Friday, May 3, 2024.

She was born near Marshfield in Steuben Township on April 16, 1927, to Herman Taylor and Delta (Roderick) Taylor.

Alice will be dearly missed by her four children, Diane (Harold) Hobaugh, Russell (Cheryl) Hutchison, Michael (Laura) Hutchison and Eric (Tina) Hutchison; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Jack (Janet) Taylor, Carolyn (Bill) Hale, Clara (Ron) Crawford, Lois Hensley and Linda (Ralph) Burmeister.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Leon Hutchison (Hutch), whom she married on March 17, 1946. Siblings preceding her in death are Vernon, Calvin, Dora, Barb, Dorothy, Edith and Joe.

Alice was a 1945 graduate of West Lebanon High School and never missed a day in all 12 grades. She retired from the VA hospital in 1987 after 22 years. In their early years, Alice and Hutch owned and operated the Hutchison Grocery and gas store in Marshfield from 1953-1956. In 1956, they moved their family to Covington where Hutch built them a house at 515 Railroad St. and she joined the First Baptist Church. Years later, they would own and run a second hand store called “The Hutch” for nine years.

Alice loved life and enjoyed many activities. These activities included camping, mushroom hunting, fishing, playing cards, going to garage sales and oil painting. She also took pride in her garden, especially the flowers.

Nothing was more important to Alice than spending time with her large family. She hosted many gatherings over the years, which included everything from Thanksgiving dinner, to extravagant Christmases, and Easter egg hunts in her backyard. One of the staples that the family looked forward to at family gatherings was her homemade noodles. She also made homemade ice cream, various pies, and a large assortment of candies for Christmas.

Alice’s love of people extended far beyond her family. She welcomed many friends, neighbors, churchgoers, and even strangers into her home. She was quick to extend a helping hand to anyone in need. Serving the community brought her much joy and reflected her strong Christian faith.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church, 518 Fifth St., Covington. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9, with the funeral to follow. Alice will be laid to rest in West Lebanon Cemetery next to Hutch.
