Athenians rally late, fall to Bulldogs

Posted

The woes continued for the Crawfordsville Athenian Softball team (1-15) as they fell 17-6 to Clinton Central *8-4) in five innings on Saturday afternoon.

Clinton Central controlled the game from start to finish. The Bulldogs put up four runs in the first two innings, showing off their strengths. Crawfordsville would have a bright spot in thebottom of the second inning as junior Christina Susdorf would get to first base after a pop fly to right field. Freshman Angeli Martinez would follow by getting on base off of a Clinton Central error. Crawfordsville would leave two runners on base at the end of the inning.

The Bulldogs would post six runs in the top of the third, giving them a 10-0 lead. Clinton Central would post two more runs in the top of the fourth and five more in the top of the fifth to bring their lead to 17-0. Pitching would be a highlight with the duo of senior Landry Whiteman and freshman Addi Mounts keeping their team in the game.

With the game all but sealed for the Bulldogs, Crawfordsville would not go down without a fight.

The Athenians would go on a six run rally, coming just two run shy of extending the game past the fifth inning. Crawfordsville’s only senior, Addie Hodges, would get the rally started after drawing a walk. Hodges would proceed to advance to third base after a couple of wild pitches and steal home after another wild pitch to put the Athenians on the board.

Crawfordsville sophomore, Molly Pierce, would rach off of a pop fly miscue by the Bulldogs followed by fellow sophomore, Oliva Hedrick, getting hit by a pitch. This would have the bases loaded for Crawfordsville. Mount would be subbed off of the mound for Whiteman, who would pitch her second stint of the game. Whiteman would have a five strikeout day, bringing her season total to 79.

Crawfordsville would see freshman Sabella Moore single to right field, driving in two more runs. Moore would then steal second and would score, along with Hedrick to bring the game to 17-5. Junior Delaney Spencer would strikeout, ending the potential comeback for Crawfordsville. Susdorf would lead the Athenains with two hits, with Moore contributing two RBI’s, a run, and a hit.

With the comeback falling short, Crawfordsville coach Mackenzi Landrum will look to two games against county rival North Montgomery next week.

“Having a shot at county, it’s exciting,” Landrum said. “We just need to be confident in what we can do and what we’ve been doing. I think our play will take care of itself.”

Before facing North Montgomery, Crawfordsville will travel to Lafayette Central Catholic on Monday, with the games against the Chargers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
