Gary L. Wann, 73, a Newtown native and recently living at The Springs of Lafayette, passed away at 8:02 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024, in Franciscan Health Hospital, Lafayette.

Gary was born Sept. 6, 1950, at Lafayette, son of the late Ivan R. and Jean Fauth Wann. He was first married to Linda Prater, and they had two children together. Later in life he married Marilyn Jo Melvin, and they shared many years together.

Gary was a 1968 graduate of Fountain Central High School and resided in Newtown until moving to The Springs. He farmed in Richland township near Newtown as his primary occupation until his health forced retirement. He was also employed by Purdue University for 20 years in maintenance. He had attended Hopewell Baptist Church in Newtown.

Gary loved farming, and a piece of him was lost when he could not continue. He also loved his neighbors and community. He wanted nothing more than to be in Newtown, the only place he considered home. He enjoyed shooting, photography, gun shows and flea markets. He had a special place in his heart for animals and cared for numerous over the years.

Surviving are children, Beth (Jason) Segal and Seth (Roberta) Wann, both of Lafayette; brothers, James P. (Glenda) Wann of Kokomo and Gregory L. (Patti) Wann of Sun City, Arizona; grandchildren, Jadrid and Brendan Segal; and great-grandson Grayson Segal.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother David.

Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, with funeral services following at 2 p.m. Pastor Mike Parks will officiate. Burial will follow at the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.
