ISP reminds public of hands-free driving law

Posted

As April, designated as National Hands-Free Driving Month by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, comes to a close, the Indiana State Police is urging drivers to adhere to the Hands-Free Driving Law, enacted to enhance safety on Indiana roadways.

Enacted in Indiana in 2020, the law prohibits drivers from holding a telecommunications device, such as a cell phone, while operating a motor vehicle. The only exception to this law is to call 9-1-1 in case of emergency.

The law aims to prevent accidents caused by distractions, which remain a significant concern on our roadways. By encouraging drivers to keep their focus on the road and their hands on the wheel, this law aims to reduce the number of collisions, injuries and fatalities associated with distracted driving.

Violation of the law may result in fines and penalties. Law enforcement agencies across the state will continue actively enforcing this law to ensure compliance and enhance road safety for all motorists.
