Patriotic tunes to fill the air

Posted

The Montgomery County Civic Band will present its “America 250” Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in conjunction with the local committee celebrating America’s 250th birthday.

The concert will be held at Pike Place, weather permitting. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and sun umbrellas. In the event of rain, the performance will move to Salter Hall in the Fine Arts Building at Wabash College.

The patriotic program will feature music highlighting significant moments in American history. “An American Spectacular” traces the nation’s story through colonial America, the American Revolution, the Civil War, westward expansion and early foreign conflicts.

The concert also will include patriotic marches by Fillmore, Sousa and King. Gaylon Ross, professor of physics at Wabash College, will serve as guest narrator for “Within These Hallowed Halls,” a musical work featuring quotations from some of the nation’s most notable leaders.

Additional selections include “For Our Heroes,” honoring community members who serve and protect local residents, and “Armed Forces Salute,” recognizing active-duty service members and veterans from all branches of the U.S. military.

Free cupcakes and commemorative America 250 souvenir coins will be available while supplies last, with 250 of each being distributed.

The concert is sponsored by Wabash College, Lakeside Book Company, Hoosier Heartland State Bank, Crawfordsville Rotary Club, Dorothy Q Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Fraternal Order of Eagles 1005 Aerie.
