Waynetown Christmas in the Park volunteer Kevin Howey opens the fourth annual lighting ceremony Saturday at Rev. Guy Tremaine Park by reading 'Twas the Night Before Christmas to a host of families in their vehicles. About 400 visitors regularly attend the event, scaled back this year due to coronavirus concerns. The early December tradition saw dozens of families watch the lighting ceremony from a distance before driving through more than 60 light-based holiday displays around the perimeter of the park. Santa even made a special stop at the park Saturday, heralded by fireworks to mark his entrance. The event was sponsored by CVL Radio, Campbell Ag Service, Town of Waynetown, Waynetown Merchants Association, Fountain Trust, Busse Excavating, Waynetown Utilities, Forman Blasters and the Christmas in the Park committee.

For the 11th consecutive year, Sheila and Mark Zachary help prepare meals at the First United Methodist Church for Thursday’s annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner. Though coronavirus concerns e canceled the traditional indoor dinner, the Zacharys and several helpers delivered meals. Thursday and served curbside at the church. As of Wednesday, the group had received more than 1,000 meal orders. The Zacharys are supported this year in preparations by Denise Bennett, Andrea Posthauer, Stephanie Hale and Deb Corey, as well as Chef Jason Anderson and Chef Rick Warner from Bon Appetit and Wabash College, respectively, who cooked 34 turkeys. Fifty turkeys have been prepared in total, compared to 2019 when 12 were cooked.

The site tested about 10 people an hour who scheduled an appointment on the state’s coronavirus website at www.coronavirus.in.gov. The site is booked up today. The Community Paramedicine Program and Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency assisted the Montgomery County Health Department with the testing.

The annual Veterans Day ceremony the Marie Canine Plaza begins Wednesday with the playing of the National Anthem. Dozens of veterans, citizens and city officials visited the plaza to show admiration, respect and gratitude to all military personnel who have given their lives preserving freedom in the United States. The ceremony began at 11 a.m. and featured speeches, an Honor Guard ceremony, Taps and more.

Due to coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, the traditional kick-off to the holiday season saw fewer vendors this year to allow for social distancing; of 26 spaces available, 21 vendors participated in the event, which serves as the club's largest fundraiser of the year. The club uses funds from the Expo, partly, to send kids to summer camp each year. The club also donates books to elementary schools and partners with Head Start to support literacy in youth.

The Crawfordsville District Public Library Children’s Department hosted its annual Book Character Pumpkin contest, families or individuals were invited to create a book character from a pumpkin or gourd without carving it. In past years, the winner was determined by popular vote, with family and friends stopping in the library to vote. This year we had a record number of votes by sharing all of the entries online. We had 1,207 votes coming from all over the United States and the world. Thank you to all of our participants who amaze us every year. This year’s winners are: first place, Baby Shark, “Baby Shark Wash Your Hands,” created by the Dominguez family; second place, Darth Vader and Storm Trooper, “Tales from Vader’s Castle” created by Keyur and Aarav Desai; and third place, The Pigeon, “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” created by Elijah Hendricks and family.

Wingate Postmaster Jennifred Jones poses next to her decorations Thursday to celebrate 50 years since the opening of the "new" post office in 1970. To honor the milestone, Jones and others at the post office handed out cupcakes and decorated the interior with flowers, pottery, Indian corn and letters of appreciation, much of which was donated by those who frequent the building. It's the people of Wingate and the small town atmosphere that have made the post office a central hub for the community, Jones said.
