Mustangs advance to sectional semis
A quest for a sectional championship began for the Fountain Central Mustangs on Thursday as they hosted Benton Central in the opening match of the IHSAA Girls Tennis Sectional No. 6 which the Mustangs do host.
After besting the Bison just a week ago in a 4-1 victory, Thursday evening would yield the exact same result as FC advanced to the sectional semi-final with a 4-1 win.
Lillie Fishero continued her undefeated season for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kinlyn Yado at one singles. Haley Webb defeated Emma Besse 6-0, 6-0 at two singles. The lone loss came at three singles for FC as Angela Gonzalez fell to the Bison’s Rachel Tolen 6-1. 4-6, 6-4.
The duo of Emily Jimenez and Alydia Mellady at one doubles brought home a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Paige Creek and Sophie Cobb. Marylee Muniz and Hannah Prickett rounded out the wins for the Mustangs at two doubles with a 6-3, 6-2 over Kourtney Sarault.
With the victory the Mustangs will now take on Attica this evening back at FC with a spot in Saturday’s sectional championship on the line.
Golf
Athenians take care of Bronchos on links
After their fourth place finish in the Sagamore Conference meet on Monday, Crawfordsville was back out on the links at the Crawfordsville Municipal Golf Course as they hosted Lafayette Jeff and were able to come away with a 169-183 win over the Bronchos.
Luke Ranard earned medalist honors with a 38 for CHS. Landon Timmons carded a 41 with freshman Tanner Gilland shooting a 44. Landon Hurt would end the evening with a 46, and Marshall Horton (48) and Thomas Bowling (51) rounded out the scoring for CHS.
“It was a good win for us as Luke and Landon were solid all day,” Crawfordsville coach Tom Perkins said. “We’re still leaving too many strokes on the greens, but that is fixable.”
Crawfordsville improves to 10-2 in dual meets on the season and will look to add another win when they travel to take on Greencastle.
Baseball
Chargers fall to ranked Knights
North Montgomery after a walk-off win against Tri-West on Tuesday was back at it on Thursday as they hit the road for a showdown with the No. 3 ranked team in Class A in the Lafayette Central Catholic Knights.
A lot of Chargers who normally don’t see a ton of varsity action were able to get some playing time on Thursday as 18 different Chargers saw a plate appearance. Ultimately the Knights would prevail in a 9-6 game.
Five different Chargers tallied their six hits as Jakob Kirsch led the way with a pair of hits and an RBI. William Ramsey, Corbin Meadows, Cade Cole, and Brookes Walters all collected a single hit. Walters continues his streak of hitting safely now in every game for the Chargers this season.
The Chargers fall to 15-9 with the loss and will conclude their Sagamore Conference schedule this evening as they host county rival Southmont.
Softball
Athenians fall to Tigers on senior night
On a night where CHS softball celebrated its three seniors in Olivia Reed, Kearston Hutchens, and Laine Schlicher, Crawfordsville would host conference rival and upcoming sectional opponent Lebanon.
The Tigers would take care of business against CHS in a 10-0 win.
Crawfordsville tallied five hits as Schlicher in her final home game led the Athenians with a pair of base hits including a double. Hutchens also in her final home game recorded a triple as the two seniors combined for three of the five hits. Bailey Crane and Brooklyn Mills would pick up the other two hits for CHS who concludes the regular season at 1-25 (1-13 SAC).
The Athenians will meet the Tigers once again as both teams open up sectional play at Lebanon on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
