The list of Southmont seniors that will miss out on their final spring season goes on and on. Many that helped Mountie teams succeed in previous seasons, and many more hoping to contribute this spring.
With the COVID-19 pandemic closing schools, that chance is gone.
“Sending those five seniors that text was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” Southmont softball coach Dan Taylor said.
For Southmont track and field, the group of seniors included Lexie Odum, Nathan France, Takeshi Greiner, Cameron Giles and several more. Giles and France were both regional qualifiers last year, and France along with Odum and Greiner will continue their careers at the collegiate level.
“These seniors didn’t even get to play their final game or have their final meet,” Southmont track and field coach Desson Hannum said. “On top of that, school is canceled and they miss out on all the things that happen during the last trimester of their high school career.”
Hannum, who is also a P.E. teacher and the Mountie football coach says he is continuing to give athletes workout ideas and suggestions.
“I still have tried to push out workouts to the kids even though I understand that some will not do it,” he said. “But there will be kids that want to stay active and prepared for the summer and next fall.”
Reese Long was the only senior on a young Southmont baseball team.
“I am so disappointed that he won’t be able to participate in his senior season which all seniors deserve to have,” Southmont coach Brad Wininger said. “You just won’t get these special times back unfortunately. Reese is the most well balanced player that I’ve ever had. He has his priorities right.”
