High School Seniors

A mom, a son, and their love for the game and each other

For four years Carson Scott poured his heart and soul into Crawfordsville basketball, and during his senior season he was a play-maker for the Athenian football team.

This spring Scott was to be a fourth-year starter for the Crawfordsville baseball team, but due to the COVID-19 that won’t happen.

Scott hopes to continue his playing career at UIndy, but that too is on hold.

“For me knowing I have a shot at the next level made it easier,” Scott said about the cancellation of his senior season. “Though the unknown is scary.”

He said the hardest part was the pain it brought on his parents.

“I was for sure feeling pain for my parents. The hard part was having to hold my mom while she cried.”

Scott’s love for the game started at an early age, but his dad made sure his mom’s love always came first.

“His dad taught him and the players he coached during travel ball season that the most important thing about being a part of a team is always being first class,” Bridget Scott, Carson’s mom, said. “Meaning, always show respect to your teammates, umpires, and opponents. Tell your mama you love her every day. He would ask each boy before practice and games. It was funny to see several run to the fence.”

Bridget is heartbroken for her son, knowing what has been lost.

“This was going to be his year,” she said. “The year he could relax, enjoy, and have a little bit of control of his own game. He could be a leader. He could set his own records and possible break some of the others. As a senior he won’t get the chance to take his position at second base, stand with his teammates for the National Anthem, be leadoff man, lay down a perfect bunt, beat out the throw first, and do the Babe Ruth slide into home.”

Scott, who left it all on the field as an Athenian, says he has just one regret as a high school athlete.

“About the only regret I have as a high school athlete is taking the time for granted,” he said. “As a freshman four years ago seems like a long time. Sitting here as a senior looking back it went to quick. I just really regret those few days I decided to mentally take off and not give 110% effort at practice.”
