Alva Grimes, 98, formerly of Advance, passed away Wednesday morning, June 15, 2022, at The Waters of Greencastle.

He was born March 13, 1924, at Greencastle, a son of the late Lawrence and Lydia (Elkins) Grimes.

On Oct. 25, 1945, he was united in marriage to Vivian Kathleen (Caldwell) Grimes in Crawfordsville. She preceded him in death Jan. 26, 2007.

Alva was a graduate of Greencastle High School. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1942-1943. He was employed with Farmers Creamery, Mid States Steel and Wire and later retired from Culver Union Hospital as a plant engineer.

Alva was a member of Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville. He enjoyed puzzles, building doll houses, woodworking and loved all dogs. The family would like to greatly acknowledge all of the caretakers who were like family to Alva.

Survivors include: son Gary (Rhoda) Grimes of Crawfordsville; son-in-law Raymond Bahney of Lebanon; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Alva had four brothers and one sister.

In addition to his parents and wife, Alva was preceded in death by three daughters, Sharon Bahney,

Karen “Sue” Collins and Cheryl Gano; and son-in-law Stan Collins.

Funeral services, with military rites, will be held at noon Monday, June 20, 2022, at Porter and Hunt Funeral Home & Crematory, 315 W. Main St., Jamestown, with visitation from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home in Jamestown. Interment will follow services at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Jamestown.
