Ann Gaines Mitchell (known as Flossie in her younger years) passed away Friday, July 30, 2021, at Crawfordsville. She was 82 years old.

Ann was born in Brevard, North Carolina, to the late John Mannon and Kathleen Belcher Gaines. She graduated from Brevard High School and continued her education at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

On Aug. 5, 1961, she married James Robert (Bob) Mitchell Jr., who preceded her in death Jan. 7, 1980. Ann is also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Sara Moseley, older sisters Ruth and Kate and nephew Lee.

Ann lived in Chattanooga, Tennesseem for many years before moving to Crawfordsville in 2012 to be closer to her daughter. Throughout the years, she worked as a middle and high school math teacher in the Chattanooga area. She began studying music as a child and played piano and organ in church services beginning at age 16, continuing into her elderly years.

Ann’s life was characterized by her deep Christian faith and church involvement. She showed great courage through her husband’s long illness and death, serving as an example to others, especially her grateful children.

Ann is survived by her children, Rob Mitchell and Carolyn Mitchell Baer, and their spouses Eva Mitchell and Jon Baer. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Lily Moseley and Nathan, Chris and Noelle Baer. She delighted in attending her grandchildren’s piano recitals and sporting events.

Ann’s family would like to thank the staff of Bickford Memory Care in Crawfordsville for their kindness, which significantly contributed to her well-being and happiness in her last years.
