Area track girls see successful seasons end at Regional

Fountain Central’s Brailey Hoagland, North Montgomery’s Katie Rice, Southmont’s Faith Allen, and Crawfordsville’s Sophia Melevage and the 4x400 relay team of Guinevere Schmitzer-Torbert, Na’arah Byard, Riley Gardner, and Devan Johnson all saw their stellar track and field seasons come to an end as they all competed in the IHSAA Regional at Lafayette Jefferson on Tuesday.

Hoagland competed in the 400M dash and placed ninth overall with a time of 59.98 which broke the school record (1:01.79) that she set herself. Hoagland while just a sophomore will have many more chances to compete at the Regional and qualify for the State Finals.

Rice qualified for the Regional in the discus throw and like Hoagland also placed in the top 10 with a ninth place finish. The senior threw a distance of 108ft 10in. The Regional caps off what has been a great athletic career for Rice. Along with her success for the Chargers in the spring, Rice also a force for the Chargers on the basketball court and earned the JR Girls Basketball Player of the Year this past winter.

Allen earned a 12th place finish for the Mounties in the 3200M run with a time of 12:02.44. The Junior helped the lady Mounties to a successful season and will now shift her focus to the cross country season this fall where she’ll look to qualify for the State Finals for the first time in her career.

Melevage concluded what was an outstanding freshman athletic season for the Athenians with a 15th place finish in the 1600M run. The freshman was the Sagamore Conference champion in the 3200M run for CHS. Along with her success on the track, her standout freshman season included an appearance in the IHSAA Girls Swimming State Finals.

The 4x400 team of Schmitzer-Torbert, Gardner, Johnson, and Byard placed 15th for the Athenians. With all four runners being underclassmen on the relay team for the Athenians, the future is definitely looking bright.
