Crawfordsville’s boys team won the swimming and dive sectional championship on Saturday.
The Athenians scored 385 points and finished just two points ahead of second-place Western Boone who scored 383 points. The win was the sixth consecutive sectional championship and 24th overall for the Athenian boys program.
Crawfordsville’s depth was the difference in the meet and helped win the championship despite only having one sectional champion.
Athenian Coach Kevin Hedrick said his squad has gotten better as the season progressed and the championship was truly a team effort.
A few individual stood out according to Hedrick. And in a close meet, the little things add up.
“Daniel Surface in the 50 and 100 free stepped up in a big way after entering the season injured and persevering throughout the season,” Hedrick said. “Tryston Sauer in diving, who is off to regional, had his best ever dive score coming from behind on the his last dive to place second. Shawn Ewoldt swimming the race of his life in the 100 breast to win and go to state this coming Friday was huge.”
“Adrian Medina, who was consistent all season, swam well. He received an IHSAA Exemplary Behavior report for being a positive force on the deck always cheering on his teammates and his competitors,” Hedrick added.
Ewoldt was the lone Athenian swimmer to claim a sectional title. The junior won the 100 breaststroke.
North Montgomery finished the day in fourth place with 214 points. The Chargers one champion was freshman Marshall Templeman in the 200 individual medley. He finished nearly four seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer.
Templeman came in second in 100 breaststroke.
Charger coach Erin Yeager said her team’s effort was excellent and their hard work all season paid off.
“Words cannot begin to describe the pride I have for this team,” Yeager said. “While some swims did not go our way, I am beyond proud of the men on this team.”
Southmont senior Clay Allen won the 100 butterfly to give the Mounties one champion.
Freshman Paxton Burris had a good day by finishing second in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle.
Four area divers advanced to today’s regional at Plainfield. Fountain Central sophomore William Armstrong won the championship with 191.30 points. Crawfordsville sophomore Sauer finished in third with 136.60 points and North Montgomery freshman Sam Woolwine finished in fourth place with 128.55 points.
Individual champions and the regional diving champion will compete at the state finals in Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday.
