Guinevere Schmitzer-Torbert touched the wall, glanced behind here at the nearest competition and then fixed her eyes on the Crawfordsville Aquatics Center scoreboard.
The Crawfordsville senior actually did that multiple times during Saturday’s final Sagamore Conference Swim Championships.
Her two convincing individual titles (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) and wins on two relay teams helped propel Crawfordsville to the girls SAC championship, edging 2024 champ North Montgomery 477-444. Danville finished third. Southmont was seventh.
On the boys side, Danville and Tri-West went back and forth with the Warriors finally outswimming the Bruins 382-333. CHS was an impressive third. North Montgomery took sixth with Southmont seventh.
CHS coach Kevin Hedrick built to this point starting with Thursday’s preliminaries.
“We suited some kids up that we needed to position ourselves to (win),” Hedrick said. “Those girls performed mostly faster than Thursday. Our freshmen, Mila Blackwell and Mabel Hoar, holy cow. They really propelled us to this victory. Then our seniors came up huge. Conference is all about winning relays and they did.”
Except for Danville winning the diving, all the events went to either CHS or North Montgomery.
“We had lots of really great swims today,” North coach Erin Yeager said. “Everybody was stepping up huge. I was proud of some of the big time drops we had.”
Schmitzer-Torbert’s victories were decisive and better times from the prelims. Hedrick saw that top to bottom in his lineup.
“We had a lot of good solid depth and a lot of really fast aggressiveness this weekend, Hedrick said. “We’re just absolutely thrilled.”
North juniors Dusty Robinson (100 backstroke) and Kylie Sankey (200 freestyle) each won individual titles and were part of the champion 400 freestyle relay.
For the boys, CHS sophomore Tryston Sauer was champion in 1 meter diving in kind of come from behind fashion. He was behind Western Boone’s Xander Rouse after the prelims and semifinals. But he nailed his final dive for a 307.25 score, nearly seven points better.
North standout freshman Marshall Templeman was the only other county swimmer to take a conference title — and he took two. Templeman bested the fields in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
“His two wins were big,” Yeager said. “I was really, really proud of all my boys. They made some big swims and made some waves with things. I’m excited to see what they’re going to do in a month. Our divers were a big help to us also.”
Hedrick was thrilled with third place for his boys team.
“We weren’t sure if we had enough horses and depth to compete with Tri-West and Danville. Going into that last relay (400 freestyle) we were only down three points. We were 78% season bests Thursday and they came out today and exceeded our expectations.”
Senior Clay Allen and freshman Paxton Burris led the South boys. Allen had two finals top fives. They teamed with seniors Hunter Gray and Tyler Petroski for the runner up in the 200 freestyle relay.
“I think we had a really good showing top to bottom,” South coach Dan McCormick said. “That 200 freestyle relay, finishing second, was a great way to end our Sagamore careers.”
McCormick was happy with both teams’ progress.
“For the first time in my three years we had the most A Finals in the conference meet and the most top fives,” McCormick said. “That’s something to build on.”
All three teams prepare for the rest of the season and are optimistic, especially Yeager.
“We kind of know where our next steps are for our plan. We still need to clean up some starts, turns and that kind of thing. This was a nice litmus test if we’re ready to rock and roll. I feel like we are.”
