Athenians advance to sectional final with win over Frankfort

The Crawfordsville boys’ soccer team grabbed an early lead and took control of the match in a 4-0 win over Frankfort on Wednesday night in the IHSAA Sectional semi-final at Crawfordsville.

Emmett Bowman scored in the 10th minute to put the Athenians up 1-0, while Andrew Jones twice found the back of the net just before the half to make it 3-0 Crawfordsville after 40 minutes.

“I think they played great,” Crawfordsville coach Marcus Hale said. “Obviously playing in the sectional with this group before, it’s ‘you win, you keep playing. You lose, you’re done.’ So they did a good job of starting off on the right foot and putting pressure.”

The win is the third for Crawfordsville over Frankfort this season, which included a 1-0 overtime win in Sagamore Conference play. Wednesday night’s match had a much different feel, and it favored Crawfordsville from start to finish.

“I think the attacking play as far as what we’ve been working on in the training ground worked well,” Hale said. “I thought Marshall Horton played a great game, Emmett Bowman, Joseph Sanchez obviously, and Andrew Jones seemed to click tonight and it has for him a bit lately.”

Sanchez added two assists, while Marshall Horton assisted on a goal as did Esteban Moreno, who scored the lone second half goal.

Hale was also proud of his defense, who has now pitched seven shutouts on the season.

“Again on the back-line, everybody that is playing,” he said. “Whether it’s Edwin (Gil Herrera), Thristan (Callejas), or Whit (Horton), and obviously Landon Timmons continued to do a great job. Really the team is defending the whole field.

The win pushes the Athenians to 13-3-1 on the season, and they will face a Tri-West (11-4-1) team they beat 3-2 in overtime during the regular season.

It’ll take a complete team effort by Crawfordsville on Saturday to replicate the same success.

“They are (excited), but we know it doesn’t matter who we are playing,” Hale said. “it’s going to be a tough game. We are going to have to be ready to play and we are really looking forward to playing for a sectional title, which was one of the goals they had at the beginning of the season.”
