The Crawfordsville wrestling team defeated South Vermillion 44-31 on Thursday to celebrate senior night.

The Athenians honored seniors Alex Brown, Clayton Owens, and Richard Pan before the meet.

“They’re all three great kids,” Crawfordsville coach Chris Ervin said. “They’ve been with me for a long time, and they all work hard and have improved and have just been solid for us all year. I’m proud of them. They have represented our program well — academically as well as on the mat. They’ve been great Athenians.”

Owens started the meet with a tech fall win over Andrew Russell 16-1 at 145 pounds to give the Athenians an early 5-0 lead. Edwin Gill Hererra won 11-5 over Dalton Payton at 152, while Moises Mora won by fall over Gabriel Browning at 195.

Kalob Brown won by fall over Levi Shew at 285, while Ethan Conkright won by injury default at 120.

Brown picked up a first period fall over Bryce Olinger at 126, while Isaac Rogers pinned Dallas Craft at 132.

“I was nervous today, because they’re tough,” Ervin said. “We beat them 42-34 last time and we have a couple of guys out tonight. I thought they just really fought hard, and I saw definite improvement from the first time we wrestled them.”

Crawfordsville closed out their dual portion of the season, and will now prepare for the IHSAA Sectional next Saturday.

“Our kids wanted that winning season,” Ervin said. “We are 16-15 now, and we needed that win and wanted to send the seniors out with a win. And I think they took that to heart, and we wrestled solid.”
