Posted

Crawfordsville girls tennis has defended what is theirs. After a 5-0 sweep of county rival Southmont on Thursday, the Athenians took on Parke Heritage in the sectional championship game looking to make it back-to-back sectional titles. The Athenians would have little to no trouble doing just that as they swept the Wolves 5-0 to earn the sectional crown.

Samantha Rohr set the tone for CHS at one singles as she quickly took care of the Wolves’ Hannah O’Brien 6-0 6-0 at one singles. Reese Minnette found her groove after a rocky start and was able to pick up a win at two singles. Harmony Taylor was victorious at three singles while the duo of Lilly Klingbeil and Cathleen McGrady brought home a win at one doubles. Elyse Widmer and Mia Wagner rounded out the sectional title sweep with a win at two doubles.

“These girls came to play today,” Crawfordsville coach Cara Amundson said. “They knew what was at stake and were able to get the job done. They continually give 110 percent and we couldn’t ask for anything more from them.”

With the sectional title win, the Athenians now advance to the regional semi-final which will also be hosted at CHS. Crawfordsville will welcome Greencastle, who defeated Owen Valley 3-2, on Tuesday with the winner getting a spot in the Regional championship on Wednesday.

“We’re just going to look forward to each match and give it everything we have,” Amundson said of the upcoming regional.

The Athenians and Tiger Cubs will get underway at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
