Athenians excited for upcoming season, open with win

The Crawfordsville boys' golf team opened the season with a 194-203 win over Danville on Thursday.

Luke Ranard led the Athenians with a 38 and was the meet medalist.

Landon Timmons fired a 47, Landon Hurt a 52 and Thomas Bowling a 54. Cole Smith carded a 56, Braxton Smith and Hayden Jeffries each shot 57 and Marshall Horton a 58.

Coach Tom Perkins is excited about the upcoming season despite a struggling 2019 and lost 2020 campaign.

"Even losing last year, I haven't lost any players," Perkins said. "I don't have any seniors.

The Athenians will lean heavily on juniors Ranard and Hurt, who return from 2019.

"Luke Ranard plays every day and Landon Hurt has been working really hard and the younger kids notice that and know they have to work hard if they want to get playing time," Perkins added.

Smith and Jeffries are a pair of freshmen that helped Crawfordsville Middle School win the Sagamore Conference title back in 2019.

With the No. 1 goal being to get out on the course and enjoy themselves, Perkins say the Athenians have still set lofty goals.

"They've talked about wanting to go to the regional this year as a team and I believe it's not too lofty of a goal," he said. "We want to finish in the top half of the conference and get two or three all-conference. We are certainly setting our goals pretty high and we want to compete for the county title."

Crawfordsville will play in the Danville Invite at Twin Bridges on Saturday.
