Athenians fall in sectional to Warriors

LIZTON — The Crawfordsville girls’ basketball team compted Wednesday evening for the first time in two weeks due to COVID-19 protocols.

The long lay-off was not kind to the Athenians, as they fell to Danville 80-24 in the Class 3A Sectional No. 25 quarterfinal at Tri-West.

The Warriors jumped out to 22-0 lead, knocking down six of their first seven shots. Danville led 25-3 after a quarter and 45-5 at the half.

“I don’t know of another team to face that kind of situation when you put it all together, but I thought we played hard and that’s all you can ask for,” Crawfordsville coach Tyler Smith said. “It’s tough even when you make plays that you want to make and they just knock down shots,” “It’s deflating and tough matchups. They have a lot of weapons.”

For the game Danville (12-10) connected on 33-of-72 field goals, while Crawfordsville (5-11) was just 7-of-28.

The Athenians didn’t make a field goal until Lauren Hale scored with 1:40 left in the first quarter. Kearston Hutchens added a made bucket in the second quarter and Elyse Widmer in the third. It wasn’t until the final period, until the Athenians finally found their offense — outscoring the Warriors 16-8.

“Incredibly tough situation,” Smith said. “Really proud of how we fought. We just talked about no matter what, don’t give up and keep playing. No matter who Danville puts out there it’s going to be a good five, so to win the fourth quarter gives us some kind of positive and shows we kept fighting.”

Maddie Patterson led Danville with 23 points, as all 12 Warriors played.

Williamson led the Athenians with eight.

Turnovers were key, Crawfordsville committed 31, including 21 in the first half, while Danville had just seven.

The Athenians graduate just two seniors in Hale and Halle Smith, and Smith is looking forward to next season.

“We are extremely excited,” the second-year coach said. “We have been talking about it just how many girls we are bringing back next year. Another year under our belts as a coaching staff and so many positives. We feel really confident that if we put in the work in the offseason that we have a chance to do some really big things and have big goals for next year.”
