Athenians stay unbeaten with sweep of Patriots

Posted

It’s a new season but Crawfordsville volleyball is off to the same exact start it was a season ago. Un-defeated. CHS on Thursday hosted Seeger and despite a tough second set by the Patriots, the Athenians would come away with a 3-0 win 25-12, 25-22, 25-10 as they move to 8-0 on the year.

The Patriots went on a 6-0 run mid-way through set two to take a 12-7 lead over the Athenians before CHS rallied to even up the score at 13-13. However the Patriots responded yet again taking a 18-15 lead, but the battle-tested Athenians would out-score Seeger 10-4 the rest of the way to claim the set two win. In set three it was Crawfordsville as they ended the game in dominating fashion.

“Coach Hearn always does a tremendous job with them and we’ve had our battles with Seeger over the years,” Cville coach Kelly Johnson said. “I’m always nervous going into matchups with them because I know it’s going to be a battle. In that second set Macy only had one kill and we were playing too much on the defensive side. We knew we had to pull ourselves out of it and I’m just proud of the girls for hanging tough.”

Macy Bruton ended the game with 19 kills for the Athenians to lead the way. Bruton as is routine for her and CHS filled up the stat sheet as she also recorded six digs, three aces and a block. Elyse Widmer tallied five digs and one ace, Samantha Rohr added a pair of digs and one assist, Halle Elliot ended her night with nine digs an one assist. Jessica Tribble recorded 25 assists and added three assists. Hallie Gayler made her presence felt at the net on the defensive end for CHS with four blocks and added eight kills, Devan Johnson added three kills while Kaydence Brost and Brooklyn Mills each added one kill.

CHS is once again off to an outstanding start to the season and Johnson as seen her team come together and the results so far speak for themselves.

“This group of girls is so complimentary of one another,” she said. “There’s no negativity whatsoever. They’re great both on and off the court and are really just good kids to be around and continue to strive the best that they can be.”

The Athenians will begin Sagamore Conference play when they return to the court on Tuesday for a trip to Lebanon. That’ll begin three straight days of play as CHS welcome Terre Haute North next Wednesday before traveling to Attica on Thursday.
