People release balloons on the Lane Place grounds to raise awareness of domestic violence on Wednesday. The event was organized by the Family Crisis Shelter to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Statewide between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021, there were 98 deaths resulting from 69 domestic violence incidents, according to the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence. That is an overall increase of 181% over the previous year. Advocates say the coronavirus pandemic has made it more difficult to help domestic violence survivors.
