Baseball & Softball Sectional pairings announced

There’s still three weeks left in the baseball and softball season, but due to Mother’s Day falling on what would normally be the day of the IHSAA Pairings Show, the IHSAA decided to reveal th brackets on Sunday evening. All eight area baseball and softball teams now know their path for a sectional title.

Softball

Class A Sectional 54 @ Riverton Parke

Fountain Central will compete in the six-team Class A Sectional 54 hosted by the Riverton Parke Panthers. Along with FC and the host Panthers, joining them will be Attica, Covington, North Vermillion and Lafayette Central Catholic.

The Mustangs drew the first bye into the semi-finals and will play the winner of Central Catholic and Attica. The game will be played on Tuesday, May 23 at 5:30.

North Vermillion drew the other bye and will play in the second semi-final. They’ll face the winner between Covington and Riverton Parke.

Class 2A Sectional 44 @ Southmont

Southmont will stay at home during the post-season as the Mounties will be the hosts of the Class 2A Sectional 44 tournament. The re-vamped, six-team sectional includes South Vermillion, South Putnam, Greencastle, Parke Heritage, and North Putnam along with the Mounties.

Southmont drew Parke Heritage and they’ll take on the Wolves in game number two. The winner between the Mounties and Wolves will square off against North Putnam in the second semi-final as the Cougars drew the bye.

South Vermillion and South Putnam will play in the opening game with the winner getting Greencastle.

Dates and times for the games have yet to be announced.

Class 3A Sectional 18 @ Twin Lakes

The North Montgomery Chargers are in a revised sectional this year. Normally competing with county rival Crawfordsville, the Chargers are now in the Class 3A Sectional 18 which will be hosted by Twin Lakes. Along with the Chargers and host Indians, the other four teams in the six-team sectional include West Lafayette, Western, Frankfort, and Northwestern.

North Montgomery will get their crack at the host Indians in the first game. The winner will take on Frankfort, a team that the Chargers have already defeated twice this season.

Western comes in as the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A with a perfect record of 15-0 on the season. They’ll take on Northwestern with the winner getting West Lafayette.

Class 3A Sectional 25 @ Tri-west

Rounding out the softball sectional draw was the Crawfordsville Athenians. CHS will travel to Tri-West for the Class 3A Sectional 25 tournament. Danville, Western Boone, Lebanon, and Monrovia join the Athenians and Bruins.

Crawfordsville drew the lone non-Sagamore Conference team in the sectional as they’ll see the Monrovia Bulldogs in game number two. The winner between CHS and Monrovia will take on Lebanon who drew the bye into the semi-finals.

Hendricks County rivals Danville and Tri-West will due battle in the opening game of the sectional. The Bruins come in ranked at No. 4 in Class 3A with Danville being ranked No. 10. The winner will take on Western Boone in the first semi-final.

Baseball

Class A Sectional 53 @ Central catholic

Fountain Central baseball will need just a single game to play for a sectional title when the Mustangs travel to Lafayette Central Catholic for the Class A Sectional 53 tournament. Just like in softball, FC and LCC will be joined by Riverton Parke, Covington, North Vermillion and Attica.

The Mustangs and Panthers both got a bye into the semi-finals and will play each other in the second semi-final. Central Catholic and Attica square off in game one with North Vermillion and Covington facing each other in game two. FC & RP met in the opening two games of the season with the Panthers taking both games.

Class 2A Sectional 44 @ Parke Heritage

Parke Heritage will once again host the Class 2A Sectional 44 which features the Southmont Mounties. Cloverdale, North Putnam, Greencastle, and South Putnam join the Mounties and the host Wolves.

Southmont will take on Greencastle in game two with the winner playing the winner of game one between Parke Heritage and North Putnam. Both South Putnam and Cloverdale drew the bye into the semi-final and will play each other in game four. The Mounties were shutout by the Tiger Cubs just last Monday 8-0.

Class 3A Sectional 20 @ Northwestern

A talented North Montgomery team will have its hands full when they Chargers open up post-season play in the Class 3A Sectional 20 hosted by Northwestern. The No. 2 ranked Western Panthers, a talented Frankfort team, along with Twin Lakes and West Lafayette will join the Chargers and Tigers.

In the first game the Chargers will square off against the No. 2 Panthers who have two division one pitchers. The most runs they’ve given up this season is six to Lebanon in their lone loss (6-5). The winner between the Chargers and Panthers will square off with the winner between Twin Lakes and West Lafayette. Northwestern and Frankfort both drew the bye into the semi-finals.

Class 3a Sectional 25 @ Crawfordsville

The No. 8 ranked Crawfordsville Athenians will host the Class 3A Sectional 25 at CHS. The same six teams as in softball will be vying for the sectional title as Tri-West, Lebanon, Danville, Monrovia and Western Boone will all converge to John Froedge Field.

Cville will get a re-match with the lone team that’s bested them in conference play as they’ll see the Tri-West Bruins in the opening game. Tri-West swept CHS 4-3 and 13-8 back on Apr. 18 & 19. Danville and Western Boone will square off in the second game while Lebanon and Monrovia both drew the bye and will battle in the semi-finals.

Crawfordsville and Tri-West will play at 5 pm on Wednesday, May 24 at 5 pm with Danville and Western Boone to follow.

The two winners will play Thursday at 5 pm with Lebanon and Monrovia to follow. The championship game is scheduled for 11 am on Memorial Day, May 29.
