Bernice Audra Mathison passed away peacefully Jan. 19, 2025, in Crawfordsville, at the age of 95.
She was born March 19, 1929, in Indianapolis, to Thomas J. Clark and Audra M. Swails. She lived a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; her brother, Dale Clark; and her devoted husband of nearly 70 years, Clarence “Gus” Mathison.
Bernice was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her children, Dr. Jeffrey (Ruth) Mathison of Jacksonville, Florida, and Dr. Barry (Diana) Mathison of Crawfordsville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory always.
Later in life, after Gus retired, he and Bernice took up roller skating — not as young athletes, but as a couple already getting on in years. That didn’t stop them from gliding across the rink together, hand in hand, proving that joy and adventure have no age limit. She also found great happiness in fishing and cycling, embracing the simple pleasures of life. Above all, her greatest joy came from the time she spent with her family and dear friends, always offering a warm smile and an open heart.
She is now whole again, reunited with Gus and those who went before her. Her legacy of love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27 at Hunt & Son Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at noon. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery South.
