Kitten season is right around the corner. If you are paying attention, you have noticed quite a few community cats roaming the streets and neighborhoods of Montgomery County. Cats can have kittens at as early as 4 months old. Also, two unsterilized cats and their offspring can produce up to 5,000 cats in seven years.
There is an organization that is trying to help decrease these numbers.
Cats Limited is an organized Trap, Neuter, Release group dedicated to vaccinating, spaying/neutering and ear tipping cats. Ear tippins is a quarter-inch cut that is made in the left ear to denote sterlization. These measures are taken to improve the animal’s quality of life and curb the Animal Welfare League’s intake numbers, which is approximately 200 cats in the facility at all times.
Cats are trapped in Havahart traps and transported to a veterinarian in Greencastle. If the veterinarian finds serious health issues that need to be addressed, she does that at the time of the surgery.
Founder of the group Heather Bazzani and other volunteers, then pick up the cats the same day and return them to their homes where they belong to a colony of community cats. If possible, young kittens are sent to rescues or fosters to later be adopted to loving homes. There are days that over a dozen cats are transported for surgeries.
Donations are an important part of keeping this non-profit organization going.
Whether you love or hate cats, sterilizing free roaming cats is the best way to see the number of cats in your neighborhood decrease.
