The Masonic Cornerstone Grand Hall & Event Center is closer to getting a new roof, a crucial step in the ongoing effort to restore the 120-year-old landmark.

After months of fundraising, the Masonic Temple Preservation Board, an nonprofit group overseeing the renovations, has met a $45,000 pledge drive challenge from the Montgomery County Community Foundation for the roof project. For every $1.50 raised, the foundation matched $1 up to the first $30,000.

Replacing the leaking roof is the first priority toward renovating the building, which was renamed after the board purchased the building at the corner of South Washington Street and East Wabash Avenue. The building is used by the Masons.

Other phases of the project include electrical upgrades and installing an elevator. The group still needs $652,000 to complete all of the renovations, including $6,000 for the roof. The board has sought grant funding from the City of Crawfordsville.

After climbing up the lobby’s grand staircase, board member Jennifer Lowe opened the door to a crumbling theater, which once hosted productions for a local drama club and schools.

“As you can see, this is what a leaking roof can do to a building,” Lowe said, standing on tarps that covered the floor and looking at debris piled up on the stage. A backdrop of a stone building had been left behind.

Plans call for restoring the theater into a 200-seat performance space.

As the board continues raising money, the building is being rented out for events. An open house for a graduating high school senior was being set up in a parlor. The board is planning a mystery dinner this fall.
