The Crawfordsville Board of Public Works and Safety approved several items on its agenda Wednesday, including plans for traffic control following the city’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration and preparations for a mural on Green Street.

The board approved Parks and Recreation Director Fawn Johnson’s request for temporary road changes to improve traffic flow after Friday’s fireworks event. The plan allows certain roads along the exit route to be temporarily converted to one-way traffic to help vehicles move more efficiently.

The board also approved a request from Director of Operations and Community Development Brandy Allen for partial alley closures around the parking lot next to 120 S. Green St. Starting July 14, New York artist Jenna Morello will begin painting a mural on the side of the building. The work is expected to be completed by July 23.

A public hearing was held last week regarding the city’s submission of a Preliminary Engineering Report and funding application to the Indiana Finance Authority’s State Revolving Loan Fund. The application does not obligate the city but allows for potential funding of future improvements at the wastewater treatment plant.

Proposed upgrades include replacing deteriorating digester covers and aging sludge dewatering equipment. The early cost estimate for the project is $4.7 million.

Public comments were accepted for five days following the hearing and are now closed. With that period complete, the board approved two resolutions: one to adopt the Preliminary Engineering Report and another granting signatory authorization for the loan program.

In other business, the board:

Approved a request made by Sue Lucas and Durham Home Inc. for a partial alley closure on Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for a croquet tournament scholarship fundraiser.

Approved a request from the Rotary Club and Hoosier Heartland State Bank to close Pike Street at Pike Place on Aug. 8 and Sept. 12 for the concerts they are sponsoring, the requested times were for 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. for both days.

Accepted a memorandum of understanding between the city and county in relations to economic development.
