BOYS SOCCER: Athenians shutout Chargers

Posted

A county title was in mind for the Crawfordsville boys’ soccer team, and the Athenians achieved it with a 13-0 shutout win over North Montgomery on Wednesday night.

After an 0-3 record against county teams last season, Crawfordsville outscored Southmont and the Chargers 22-1 this fall. The Athenians are now 10-2 on the season and 5-1 in the Sagamore Conference, while North Montgomery falls to 0-11 and 0-7 in SAC play.

“That was one of their goals from the beginning of the year, is they wanted to win a county title,” Crawfordsville coach Marcus Hale said. “And those were reasonable goals if we played the way we were capable of playing we should have been able to do that. We had to take care of business when we played South, and obviously we did today. I’m happy for them, but we’ve got more work to do too.”

Crawfordsville scored a trio of goals in the first six minutes of the contest, and added five more to lead 8-0 at the half.

Emmett Bowman led the Athenians with a pair of goals and an assist, while Patrick Corado added a pair of goals along with Alex Caballero and Jose Manuel Olvera. Joseph Martinez score a goal and had an assist, while Eli Reeves, Landon Hurt, and Landon Timmons each scored. Andrew Jones added a goal and assist, while Kevin Barrera-Chinchilla had three assists.

North Montgomery followed a match with Sagamore Conference leader Tri-West on Monday with the Athenians on Wednesday, but coach Tristain Hall saw improvements.

“There were some situations where we tried some new people in different lineups, and obviously there is some inexperience,” he said. “There at the end the passing was good.”

Another goal for Crawfordsville was to finish in the top-3 of the SAC, and they’ll get the opportunity to secure that position when they host Danville next Thursday, after hosting West Lafayette on Monday.

“To finish top-3 in the conference, depending on how it plays out,” Hale said. “This time of year you want to continue to play a little bit better every game, and they are applying what we are working on and training, which is all I could really ask for.”
