BOYS SOCCER: Mounties come from behind to defeat Athenians 4-3

NEW MARKET — As Connor Osborn lined up to kick a free kick from 25 yards out with 39 seconds to go, the Southmont sideline was too excited to realize they had a chance to defeat arch-rival Crawfordsville. Less than a minute later and the Mounties were jumping up and down in celebration after Osborn nailed the kick and gave his team a 4-3 come from behind win over the Athenians — earning the first pair of Journal Review County Chase Points of the fall.

Just four minutes into the second half Tristen Bronaugh found the back of the net to put Crawfordsville up 3-1, and as the Athenians (3-2, 1-1) looked to be in control, Osborn and his Mountie teammates were rallying around each other.

“I just wanted to put it all out on the field,” Osborn said. “We became stronger at the end, and came together, and started playing together as a team. And we pulled it off.”

With 28 minutes left in the second half, Osborn found the back of the net for his first goal, before Beckett Jett tied the game with 13 minutes remaining.

“I think the biggest thing was our attitude,” Southmont coach Brandon Rash said. “Keeping a positive attitude, and staying positive the whole time. Our captains and seniors did a really nice job of kind of calming everybody down and brining them together. And keeping a good attitude the whole time. It was a tough game.”

Crawfordsville played a man down for the better part of the last 20 minutes of the game, and it was noticeable on both ends of the field, as the Athenians struggled to retain possession of the ball.

“To be honest when you go a man down, and you’re playing 10 against 11 there’s an extra player out on the field for the other team,” Crawfordsville coach Marcus Hale said. “And there’s always going to be someone open to get the ball to.”

In the first half, Skylar Wood put the Mounties (2-2, 1-1) on the board first with an early goal, before Kevin Barrera-Chinchilla responded with a pair of quick goals to push the Athenians ahead 2-1.

Crawfordsville is back in action on Tuesday at Covington, while Southmont travels to North Montgomery on Tuesday.
