BOYS SOCCER: North secures county crown with 1-0 victory over Athenians

LINDEN — It took North Montgomery assistant coach Mike Margeson 10 years to win a county title as the head coach, and in his first season at the helm, Tristain Hall guided the Chargers to a third county title in five seasons with a 1-0 win over Crawfordsville on Wednesday.

“It means a lot to this team,” Hall said. “The guys did exactly what we talked about in practice.  They were ready to go, right from the beginning they were the stronger team out there, and they proved they wanted it more.”

After a dead even 0-0 first half, Cooper Bowman found the back of the net in the first minute of action in the second 40 minutes, and the Charger’s (4-9-1, 3-4 SAC) locked down to close out the game.

“Our defense buckled down, and they did what they had to do,” Hall said. “They had been doing it the whole game.”

Jayden Rausch was in the zone in goal with nine saves.

Crawfordsville (5-8-1, 1-5 SAC) had its opportunities offensively, they just weren’t able to capitalize. The Athenians took 24 shots, nine of which were on goal.

“We had some combination play,” Crawfordsville coach Marcus Hale said about the Athenian’s second half offense. “We just couldn’t finish, and that’s just the reality of it in both halves. We had opportunities in both halves and just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

North Montgomery hosts Covington on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m, while Crawfordsville travels to West Lafayette on Monday.
