BOYS SOCCER PREVIEW: Mounties hungry for success

The Southmont boys’ soccer team returns seven seniors for the 2021 season and have high hopes for a successful season.

“As a team the coaches and players are really are hoping to have a winning season,” second-year coach Stephanie Kennedy said. “That has been a main goal for us the last couple years which I think is a very realistic goal for us to have.”

The Mounties graduated four seniors, who were all offensive players for a 3-7-1 team in 2020, but Kennedy is confident in younger players to fill those gaps. Newcomers this season include Tyler Petroski, Hunter Gray, Josh Troutman, and Lucas Oppy.

The seven returning seniors are Ryan Reimondo, Kristian Prado, Taishi Greiner, Justin Bachmann, Logan Phillips, Silas Adams, and Christian Worth.

Kennedy feels like a key this offseason has just been getting the ball out and at their feet and just playing.

After struggling to complete games in 2020 — the Mounties feel like if they put together two complete halves — they’ll be able to stay competitive against anyone on their schedule.

“For us, if we could put two halves together,” Kennedy said. “I think that alone would give us more chances to win. Last season, we continuously played great halves but never would finish that into the second half of the game. So finding the conditioning to finish a full game is very important for us this year as well as making sure are using our whole pitch.”

Kennedy feels like the biggest improvement for the Mounties this season will be defensively.

“A component for us is our defense, our defense line is all returning from last year,” she said. “We also a great group of seniors that are going to help us out. They come with a lot of experience and are a great group of leaders especially for our young guys.”
