BOYS TENNIS: Mounties beat Wolves in sectional preview

Posted

NEW MARKET — It is likely Southmont will have to get past Parke Heritage next week to repeat as sectional champions.

On Monday night the Mounties earned a 4-1 tune-up win over the Wolves.

“Overall this is a pretty good win for us,” Southmont coach Nathan Poynter said. “Parke Heritage is a pretty good team and another team in our sectional. I think everyone seems to be playing a whole lot better. We are kind of coming together.”

Adam Cox defeated Evan James 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while No. 3 singles player Luke Watson picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Mason Bowsher. The duo of Mason Hall and Micah Korhorn beat Garrett McCalister and Gavin Jacks 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Chayce Howell and Harrison Haddock defeated Max Dowd and Aidan Crum 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Luke Tesmer fell 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles position to Joel Gooch.

After a 1-6 start, Southmont has won nine matches in a row and finish the regular season with Sagamore Conference foes North Montgomery and Lebanon, before opening the IHSAA Sectional at Crawfordsville next Wednesday.

“To come back and win nine matches in a row, that’s very big for the whole team mentally, especially for how we started off and who we played to start off,” Poynter said. “No matter who you play it’s hard to string together nine wins. If we can pull these next two off this week then it should be big mentally.”
