BOYS TENNIS: Mounties sweep Chargers

Posted

NEW MARKET — Southmont is the boys’ tennis county champion for the third time in the last four seasons.

The Mounties swept North Montgoemry 5-0 on Tuesday.

“Our singles all played extremely loose and played well,” Southmont coach Nathan Poynter said. “Everything tonight went pretty good.”

Southmont dominated at the three singles spots, only losing one game.

Adam Cox blanked Alex Chapman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Luke Tesmer beat Nate McCoy 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Luke Watson defeated Jaxin Wethington 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 spot.

At No. 1 doubles the duo of Mason Hall and Micah Korhorn beat Will McKinnis and Hayden Turner 6-3, 6-2, while Chayce Howell and Harrison Haddock defeated Hunter and Haze Kashon 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

North Montgomery coach Rick Holtz paired the Kashon brothers together at No. 2 doubles for the first time all season.

“With Hunter being a senior and having a brother on the team, I wanted them to have one game together,” he said. “They haven’t played together all year, but I told Hunter, he may not appreciate it today, but in five years he will appreciate the memory of playing with his brother.”

And overall, Holtz felt like the Chargers played well despite the loss against a Southmont team that has won 10-straight matches.

“The score won’t reflect it, but the guys played well,” he said “They were able to hit their shots, South just hit better shots. South is a really good team and a good chance we will see them in the sectional.”

The Mounties conclude the regular season at Lebanon on Thursday, before opening up sectional play next week at Crawfordsville.

An 11-game winning streak is something Southmont is hoping for as they chase a second straight sectional title.

“After a while you learn to win and it makes a big difference, because when you are optimistic about yourself, you fight a little harder,” Poynter said.
