BOYS TENNIS PREVIEW: Mounties will be local favorite

Riding back-to-back sectional titles — the Southmont boys’ tennis team will be the local favorite this season with six returning players from its seven-man lineup in 2020.

That includes all-SAC No. 1 singles player Adam Cox, who went undefeated in the Sagamore Conference last season.

Cox’s position at No. 1 and returning Luke Tesmer at No. 2 are the only one guaranteed spots though as longtime Southmont coach Nathan Poynter says there’s a thick competition for the remaining spots.

“We graduated one senior last year, so we are still trying to figure out where everyone ends up in the lineup,” he said. “We are excited to have a large number of last year’s varsity returning. As of right now we have about 7 players competing for 5 spots. Competition is good for the team. I am excited to be watching our team push each other.”

With returning six of the seven guys, Poynter says the team chemistry is some of the best he’s ever experienced.

“Our team is as much like a family as any team I have ever coached,” he said. “The unity is very strong.”

Southmont hopes to repeat as county, conference, and sectional champions.
