Carl Wayne Steiner, 81, of Waveland passed away Feb. 13, 2025.

He was born Oct. 27, 1943, at Clay County Hospital, to Herman and Lucille (Leohr) Steiner.

On June 26, 1966, he married Elizabeth “Jane” Brown. Carl and Jane lived in Bowling Green, Indiana, and Waveland. Carl was proud of his four children, Amy (Mike) Dawson of Brighton, Wisconsin, Ann (Stuart) Boehning of Rancho Santa Fe, California, Alice (Douglas) Springer of Bristol, Indiana, and Andrew (Rikki) Steiner of Houston, Texas.

Carl was the proud grandfather to nine grandchildren, Alexander Dawson, Kennedy Boehning, Philip Boehning, Austin Dawson, Ellanor Boehning, Dylan Springer, Harrison Boehning, Landyn Springer, and Addison Springer. Carl also had four siblings, John (Mary Ruth) Steiner, Victor “Vic” (Mary Jo) Steiner, Carolyn (Norman) Keiser and Richard (Jeanette) Steiner. Carl’s brothers-in-law were William “Bill” (Moyra) Brown and David (Elaine) Brown. Carl also has many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends.

Carl graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1961. Carl earned his B.S. (1965) and M.S. (1968) degrees in mathematics and physical education from Indiana State University. He held a license to teach mathematics, physical education, health and safety and driver’s education. Carl taught with the South Montgomery Community School Corporation for 44 years. He began teaching at New Market Elementary School in 1965 as a 5th and 6th grade math teacher. He coached junior high basketball, football, and track. He later taught math at Southmont Junior/Senior High School and sponsored National Honor Society. Carl retired from teaching algebra at Southmont High School in 2009. In 2012 he was inducted into the Southmont Hall of Fame.

Carl loved God and his family. He enjoyed supporting his children and grandchildren by going to their horse shows, sporting events, and helping them with multiple “projects.” He also loved teaching, farming, his tractors, gardening and feeding and watching the birds. He was the owner of Steiner Lawn Care Service for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors and his line of wheel horse mowers.

Carl was a member of the Bowling Green Community Church where he held many leadership positions. He served as a church trustee where he oversaw the maintenance of the Fairview Cemetery. He was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA), National Education Association (NEA), the South Montgomery Community Education Association (SMCEA) and the Waveland Public Library Board.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carl’s memory to Fairview Cemetery Maintenance Fund c/o Bowling Green Community Church, 164 Jefferson St., Bowling Green, IN 47833 or the Christian Care and Share Food Pantry, 405 E. 14th St., Clay City, IN 47841.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Avenue, Brazil, Indiana. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 24 at Lawson-Miller Chapel followed by burial at the Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green.
