Caucus date set to fill council vacancy

Local Republicans have set a date to select a person for the empty seat on the Montgomery County Council following the death of president Terry Hockersmith.

A caucus will be held to fill the vacancy Sept. 1 at the Crawfordsville Country Club, Montgomery County GOP chair Dan Guard said. Hockersmith died last week with four months left in his term.

David Hunt, who is running this fall for an at-large seat on the council, said he plans to file. Hockersmith had endorsed Hunt, the former coroner, in June’s primary election.

“I know it’s going to be budget time when somebody needs to fill that seat,” Hunt said, “so I’ve been through the budget process as an officeholder, so I just hope I would be a good fit.”

Candidates have until three days before the caucus to file with the party chair.

Representatives from each Republican precinct will cast a vote during the caucus, which is closed to the public.

The person with a majority of the votes is appointed to the seat.
