HILLSBORO — The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of a house fire that killed a 44-year-old man Thursday in rural Hillsboro.

The fire broke out mid-morning on the second floor of the home at 2900 E. C.R. 40S. Firefighters found the victim in a bedroom and pulled him out, said Dave Hosick, director of public affairs for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

Authorities pronounced the man dead at the scene, Hosick said. The victim’s name was not immediately available.

Investigators believe the fire started in the bedroom, Hosick said.

Waynetown Community Volunteer Fire Department assisted Hillsboro firefighters at the scene.
