Superhero fans, please don your capes and join us at Crawfordsville District Public Library to celebrate Free Comic Book Day from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Comic book fans of all ages are welcome to visit the Youth Services Department to pick up a free comic book and a superhero goodie bag while supplies last. A library card is not required to join in on the fun.
We encourage family-friendly costumes — anyone who attends in costume may receive an extra comic book!
In addition to free comics and goodies, we have prepared several activities to enjoy. While here, you are invited to pose with our comic book props and snap a photo in front of a themed background. Teens may also embark on a scavenger hunt to find 3D superhero icons such as Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s shield and Batman’s mask hidden throughout the building.
Younger comic book fans may take part in a superhero-themed picture hunt in the children’s area. Families may also pick up a take-and-make Captain Underpants bookmark craft to create at home. Comic book coloring and activity pages in varying difficulty will be available for teens and children.
Free Comic Book Day is an annual event celebrated in comic book specialty shops and public libraries across the nation. Since its conception in 2002, Free Comic Book Day has made comics accessible to millions of fans young and old. Although the event is traditionally held on the first Saturday in May, it was postponed until August this year to help ensure a safer celebration.
If you or your child are looking to delve into the world of comic books and graphic novels, please feel welcome to ask a librarian for recommendations. Our children’s and teen collections each include graphic novel and manga titles for a variety of reading levels and interests. A YA graphic novel display is currently located in our newly revamped teen area, featuring free graphic novel-themed bookmarks and reading recommendations.
Comic book series including “Teen Titans” and “Justice League’’ are always available for checkout in our YA area as well. Older readers can also find a growing graphic novel selection in our adult collection upstairs in the Reference Department. A wide selection of manga and graphic novels can also be found and accessed with a library card and an Internet-accessible device on Hoopla and Libby.
