The Crawfordsville Fire Department has a long and stoic history of being an aggressive, progressive and proactive emergency services provider. CFD leads the nation in many different fields of operations by adhering to the following mission statement: “Prevent or minimize the loss of life and property through education and intervention to the satisfaction of those we serve in a safe, efficient, professional, and innovative manner.”
To accomplish this mission, one primary directive of the CFD is to provide public health and safety education. Of the many types of education provided, the most rewarding for the department members is the topic of Fire Prevention. The National Fire Protection Association annually designates the second week of October as Fire Prevention Week, in honor and remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire.
This designation means that October is a remarkably busy month for CFD in providing public fire safety education. This is accomplished through various avenues. The two most popular of which being CFD providing tours which incorporate fire safety instruction of both fire stations to numerous groups throughout Montgomery County; and, perhaps the most rewarding, the instructing of all first and third grade students in both Crawfordsville and North Montgomery school systems. This educational experience is tailored to provide a grade level and age appropriate approach to home and personal fire safety, which could only be accomplished with the aid and assistance of the teachers and school corporations.
Although October, mainly Fire Prevention Week, is a popularly requested time for the Crawfordsville Fire Department to provide public education, they embrace and incorporate it as a year-round responsibility. Public fire safety and health educational services provided by the CFD include fire extinguisher classes, CPR and AED training, health and wellness fairs, career fairs, hazardous materials education, incident management, and any other opportunities that arise. These services are proudly provided to the various and diverse groups, institutions, and business throughout Montgomery County.
